As busy moms, we often wear multiple hats: caregiver, chef, housekeeper, and sometimes, even a taxi driver! We keep track of who needs new clothes, new shoes, who needs to be bathed, nails cut, ears cleaned. We schedule doctor’s appointments (and take the kids!), attend school and sporting events, arrange playdates – you get the point. We do A LOT. And, in the midst of juggling these responsibilities, our homes can quickly become a source of stress rather than a source of calm. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the clutter of toys, shoes, household items scattered across your space and craving a more functional home, you’re not alone! It’s time to take a step back and assess whether your home truly supports your family’s needs.

Here are ten signs that your home might not be functioning as it should—and how you can start creating a peaceful, organized environment that works for you and your family.

1. Mornings Feel Like a Marathon

Do you find yourself racing against the clock every morning, scrambling to find shoes, backpacks, or that all-important favorite mug? If getting out the door feels chaotic and stressful, it’s a clear sign that your home isn’t set up to support your family’s morning routine.

Solution:

Start by designating a specific spot for shoes and backpacks. Most people would suggest creating this place near an entrance HOWEVER, I want you to implement this solution where the natural drop zone of these items is. For my family, it’s in the kitchen! We come in through our front door, walk straight down the hallway and drop everything on the kitchen counters. Therefore, we needed a drop spot that was in (or nearby) our kitchen because that’s what was going to work best with our existing habits!

Invest in a simple storage solution like baskets or hooks to keep things organized. This small change can significantly streamline your mornings and reduce the frantic search for missing items.

2. Your Entryway is a Dumping Ground

If your entryway is the dumping ground and resembles a war zone with shoes, coats, bags, and mail piled high, it’s time to rethink how this space functions. A cluttered entryway can set a negative tone for the rest of the day, leaving you feeling frazzled before you even step inside.

Solution:

Implement a “landing zone” for items that need to be stored away. Consider a small bench with storage, a shoe organizer, or a set of bins labeled for each family member. Encourage everyone to put things away as they come in, creating a habit that keeps the area tidy.

3. You Can’t Find What You Need When You Need It

Nothing is more frustrating than not being able to find the remote, a favorite toy, your keys or even essential paperwork. If your home is filled with so much stuff that you’re constantly searching for lost items, it’s a sign that your organizational systems aren’t working. And, maybe you should consider getting rid of a few things, but we can talk about that more later.

Solution:

Start paying attention to recurring problems – use my Trouble Areas to Tidy Spaces Guide & Workbook to guide you through the process of identifying the root causes of daily clutter and stress in your home, and learn how to identify the key areas that need improvement.

4. The Kitchen is a Cluttered Chaos Zone

Is your kitchen counter overflowing with mail, lunch boxes, and random dishes? If you feel like you can’t prep a meal without clearing a space first, it’s clear that your kitchen isn’t working efficiently.

Solution:

Dedicate a few minutes each evening to clear the counters. Make it a family activity where everyone pitches in to put away items and wipe down surfaces. Also, consider investing in drawer organizers and storage solutions that keep utensils and kitchen gadgets easily accessible but out of sight.

5. Homework Happens Anywhere But at the Homework Station

Does homework get done on the kitchen table, often surrounded by clutter? If your children are struggling to focus because of distractions from their surroundings, it’s time to create a designated homework space.

Solution:

Set up a small area in your home specifically for homework. This could be a quiet corner in the living room or a small desk in their room. Equip this space with supplies they need, like pencils, paper, and a designated spot for backpacks, so everything is easily accessible.

6. You Feel Overwhelmed by Toys and Playtime Clutter

Toys multiplying overnight? If your living room is overrun by scattered toys and you feel like you’re swimming in a sea of stuffed animals, it’s a sign that playtime is taking over your home.

Solution:

Designate a specific area for toys and encourage your kids to clean up when they’re finished playing. Use bins or baskets for easy storage, and consider doing a toy rotation so that you don’t have every single toy available at all times. That just makes for a whole lot of cleaning!

7. You Can’t Relax in Your Own Space

Your home should be a haven where you can unwind, but if clutter and disorganization make you feel on edge, it’s not fulfilling that role. A chaotic environment can lead to a chaotic mind. We already know the noise in motherhood is LOUD. Your home should not be adding to it.

Solution:

Take the first steps towards creating a home that works for you with the Trouble Areas to Tidy Spaces Guide & Workbook. I will walk you through my four step process on how to identify your home’s biggest challenges and what you can do to change them!

8. Family Activities Feel Cramped and Disorganized

Are family activities constantly interrupted by clutter or a lack of space? If your family game night is overshadowed by disorganization, it’s a sign that your home is not accommodating quality family time.

Solution:

Evaluate the spaces where your family spends time together. Rearrange furniture to create a more open, inviting area for activities. Incorporate multifunctional pieces of furniture to contain the clutter. Encourage family members to help keep these spaces organized by involving them in the tidying process.

9. You’re Exhausted by the Never-Ending Cleaning Cycle

If you feel like you’re constantly cleaning but never getting ahead, it might be a sign that your home isn’t designed for easy maintenance. This can lead to frustration and burnout.

Solution:

Adopt a “clean as you go” philosophy. Involve the whole family in maintaining the home by assigning age-appropriate chores. Simplifying your cleaning routine with designated cleaning days can also help everyone stay on the same page.

10. Your Home Doesn’t Reflect Your Family’s Values or Lifestyle

If your home feels like it’s filled with things you don’t love or that don’t serve your family’s needs, it’s a sign that you haven’t assessed what’s truly important to you.

Solution:

Take some time to evaluate what aspects of your home make you feel happy and what doesn’t. Create a wishlist (using the worksheets in my guide!) of changes that would enhance your family’s lifestyle. This could include anything from adding more storage to redesigning a space to fit your family’s needs.

It’s Time to Reassess and Refresh

If you recognize any of these signs in your home, it’s time for a change. Remember, creating a peaceful, organized environment doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start small and focus on one area at a time.

Your home should support your family’s needs, not add to your stress. By taking practical steps to assess and improve your living space, you can create a home that brings more calm and order into your life.
