Affordable Half Bathroom Renovation Ideas

One of my favorite DIY projects to date has been renovating our half bathroom. If you’re new to renovating or just looking to freshen up a space without major effort, half bathrooms are a great place to start! With their typically smaller size, these spaces offer a unique opportunity to make impactful changes without a hefty price tag. You can easily change the space with a new coat of paint, update fixtures, or add stylish decor. There are numerous affordable half bathroom renovation ideas you can tackle yourself. I was inspired to makeover our half bathroom shortly after I got pregnant with my second daughter. I really needed at least one of the bathrooms in our home to be clean and up to date (if you’ve been pregnant before you can probably understand why, lol). Luckily, the half bathroom makeover was relatively quick and didn’t break the bank. In this post, I’ve compiled a list of budget-friendly ideas to transform your half bathroom into a functional and aesthetic space.

Affordable Half Bathroom Upgrades You Can Do Yourself

The nice thing about making over a half bathroom is that they are usually small in size. Which means, your budget can also be smaller in size! I put together a list of affordable upgrades you can do yourself for relatively low cost. I used several of the things on this list for or bathroom makeover including paint, new hardware, lighting, wall art and decor, flooring and storage solutions.

1. Fresh Paint:
   • Repaint walls with a fresh, light color to make the space feel larger and more inviting.
2. New Hardware:
   • Replace old faucet handles, towel bars, and cabinet knobs with modern, stylish options.
   • Match the finishes for a cohesive look.
3. Lighting:
   • Upgrade lighting fixtures to something more contemporary or elegant.
   • Add a dimmer switch for adjustable lighting to create different moods.
4. Mirror Upgrade:
   • Replace the standard mirror with a framed one or a unique shape to add character.
5. Refinish or Paint the Vanity:
   • Give the vanity a new look with a coat of paint or a wood finish.
   • Replace the countertop with a budget-friendly option like laminate or butcher block.
6. Wall Art and Decor:
   • Hang some affordable artwork or DIY prints to add personality.
   • Use floating shelves to display decorative items or plants.
7. New Fixtures:

For our bathroom, I was able to use second hand items that kept our cost down a lot. My parents had a toilet leftover from a recent bathroom renovation they did that they gave to us and my in laws had a pedestal sink they removed from one of their bathrooms that they no longer needed. Be sure to ask around to friends or family because you never know who has something sitting in their garage that they’d LOVE to get rid of. Also, Habitat for Humanity is an awesome place to find toilets and vanities. They always have TONS! And, I know some of you are thinking *gross Emily* but listen, if you are working with a tight budget then you’re going to have to get comfortable with a little gross… most things can be cleaned and sanitized just fine! I also kept the existing mirror because it compliments my style nicely.

Important Things to Consider When Renovating a Small Half Bathroom

If you didn’t already know, I am a planner by nature. Especially when it comes to my projects. I have a big closet renovation I REALLY want (and need) to do but I have been stewing on the plans for well over 8 months at this point. I’m not saying you need to put THAT much thought into but I would urge you think it through at least a little bit. If you’re going to put your time and money into this project, make the space work for you to the best of its ability. So, to get you started, consider these ideas and tips so you can create a stylish, functional, and personalized half bathroom without spending a fortune.

Space Saving Ideas for Small Half Bathrooms

One of the biggest motivating factors behind this bathroom makeover was making it more functional. Because of our current life stage, we are potting training kids which means we have step stools, potty seats, wipes, gloves (lol, nurse here) and extra clothes. All of which, I wanted to keep in the bathroom and not have spilling out into our hallway or other living spaces. Ideally, I wanted it to be tucked away in a cabinet but our space was too small to accommodate a vanity with cabinets that would be large enough to store all of that stuff. SO, I ended up choosing a pedestal sink. With that, I am able to tuck the potty seat and step stool under the sink and out of the way when they’re not in use and I can quickly access them out when needed.

However, because I lost contained storage space by using the pedestal sink, I still needed a place to for other bathroom essentials such as toilet paper, towels, soap, etc. I opted for slim, light floating shelves just above the toilet. They’re out of the way and blend in enough that the room doesn’t feel overcrowded but they still offer the storage solution I needed. Below are some other great space saving ideas for small bathrooms!

1. Wall-Mounted Fixtures:
   • Use wall-mounted sinks and toilets to free up floor space and create a more open feel.
2. Over-the-Toilet Storage:
   • Install shelving or cabinets above the toilet for extra storage without taking up floor space.
3. Corner Sinks:
   • Opt for a corner sink to maximize usable space in a small bathroom.
4. Compact Vanity:
   • Choose a slim or floating vanity to provide storage while taking up minimal space.
5. Sliding Doors:
   • Replace traditional doors with pocket or sliding doors to save space.
6. Recessed Shelving:
   • Build recessed shelves into the walls for storage that doesn’t protrude into the room.
7. Multi-Functional Furniture:
   • Use furniture pieces that serve multiple purposes, like a vanity with built-in storage.
8. Hooks and Racks:
   • Install hooks and racks on the back of the door or walls for towels and robes.
9. Mirror Cabinets:
